Syllabus for the Spring Semester in 2005

一、        科目概要Course Description

This is a 4-credit year-long course designed for students in the 1st year of two-year technical college. This course introduces students to the fundamental skills and concepts needed for the successful delivery of speeches. The topics covered in the class include selection of topics, organization of content, delivery skills, outlining, audience analysis, selection and construction of visual aids, methods of persuasion and constructive critiquing. This course places special emphasis on three types of speeches: informative (Fall semester) and impromptu speeches, persuasive and speeches for special occasions (Spring semester). Pronunciation and intonation will also be a main focus of this class throughout the school year.

二、        教學目標Course Objectives

The students will be able to:

1. deliver different types of grammatically accurate speeches in English;

2. articulate the factors affecting effective delivery of speeches;

3. make effective use of eye contact, gestures, and one’s voice;

4. choose appropriate topics for different audiences;

5. organize ideas logically and coherently;

6. create and make use of visual aids in a presentation;

7. locate sources of materials for speeches;

8. offer thoughtful critiques of speeches heard.

三、        評量方式與評分比例分配Evaluation CriteriaGrading

Persuasive and Special Occasions speeches (Oral, written, powerpoint): 30% (10-15 minutes)

Impromptu speeches, voice & video recordings (online and off), speech analyses: 15%

Quizzes: 10%

Mid-term exam: 20%

Final exam: 20%

Attendance: 5%

四、        課堂要求Course Requirement Attendance Policies

1. Students are required to participate actively in class.

2. Students are expected to wear appropriate attire when making presentations.

3. Cell phones and beepers should be turned off in class.

4. Visual aids or PowerPoint presentations are required for each presentation.

5. Being late for more than 15 minutes will be considered an absence.

6. More than three unexcused absences will result in failure in the course.

7. There will be no make-up presentations. If you need to change the date of your scheduled speech, exchange time slots with a classmate and notify the instructor in advance.

8. Voice recordings are required for submission.

Suicide rates on the rise

From Taipei Times:

Civic groups attending a forum for depression and suicide prevention warned yesterday that the nation's suicide rate has risen dramatically over the past decade, and that it is often closely linked to depression. They also noted that suicide was ranked ninth in the nation's top 10 causes of death last year.
